    My parents grow a vine that produces an unusual fruit called bitter melon. Grandpa Ecobiza, who came to the states from the Phillipine’s in the 1920′s, frequently utilized it in his cooking. Most people I know have never heard of it. It tastes like it’s name -bitter . It’s gnarly and it’s oh so good in soups and exotic food.

    No, it’s not in this Masala dish, but my father gives a share of the bitter melon to his Indian neighbor Chaya. In return, she travels across the street to bring our family her delicious Indian food, using that bitter and wonderful delicacy.

    Chaya is responsible for my Indian food addiction. Thank you Chaya. In her honor, is this easy (for Indian food anyhow), healthy, fresh, spicy and oh so satisfying vegetarian dish with a simple unleavened Indian bread. Read More
